Alabama getting 114 new officers because of grants

MONTGOMERY | Alabama cities and counties are getting enough federal stimulus money to hire 114 police officers.
Vice President Joe Biden and Attorney General Eric Holder announced the law enforcement grants for all 50 states Tuesday. The grants will employ more than 1,000 officers nationwide for three years.

Education records to be destroyed

The Tuscaloosa County School System is going to destroy the special education records of students born on, or before, Dec. 31, 1983.
The records will destroyed on Aug. 6 because they've been kept for the maximum number of years prescribed by state law, according to a news release.

MONTGOMERY | The Court of the Judiciary on Wednesday declined to reconsider its rejection of a proposed settlement of an ethics case involving a Hale County judge.
An attorney for Circuit Judge Marvin Wiggins said Thursday that he will file a response to the court's decision.

Fire, daughter's death leave family searching for answers

Dale and Brandi Smith have seen their share of trouble.
Two years ago, a fire destroyed their home. Their insurance company has yet to reimburse them for the damage, leaving them without a place of their own. They have been living in a rental home owned by Brandi Smith's brother-in-law, Alan Banks.

Alabama Law School professor, on Wednesday became the first candidate to announce a bid for the House District 63 seat in the Alabama Legislature.
The seat became open when the incumbent, Rep. Robert Bentley, decided to run for the Republican gubernatorial nomination in 2010.
